Tilting at Wind Turbines: Should the Government Subsidize Renewable Energy?

May 19, 2011 by

Switching from conventional sources of electricity like coal and natural gas to renewables like wind and solar, our elected leaders tell us, will reduce pollution, advance renewable technology and spark a green jobs revolution. Is renewable energy really a green pathway to a brighter economic future? Or is it nothing more than a heavily subsidized impossible dream? To learn more, we spoke with Cal State Fullerton economist Robert Michaels and Mark Tholke, an executive at enXco. Approximately 6.5 minutes. Produced by Paul Feine and Alex Manning. PART 1 WIND POWER PROGRAMS – RPM AT MPH.wmv

THIS IS A VIDEO THAT I WROTE TO FIGURE OUT HOW MANY RPMs THE WIND TURBINE WILL SPIN FREELY WITH NO LOAD ON IT IN THE GIVEN WIND CONDITIONS IN A CERTAIN AREA. THAT WAY I WOULD KNOW WHAT VOLTAGES TO EXPECT IN THE AVERAGE WINDS OF THAT AREA. AND IF THE WINDS ARE LOWER FOR THAT AREA I COULD EITHER SHORTEN THE PROP FOR A LITTLE MORE RPMs. OR I COULD JUST ADD MORE MAGNETS, OR REWIRE THE OUTPUTS. ONE OTHER ADVANTAGE TO THIS PROGRAM IS IF I KNOW THE EVERY DAY AVERAGE WIND SPEED , I CAN DESIGN THE ALTERNATOR TO GIVE ME A DESIRED OUTPUT. TOGETHER WITH THE OTHER PROGRAM THAT IS PART 2, I CAN FIGURE OUT THE EXPECTED POWER OUT AND DETERMINE THE PROP SIZE AND THE RPMS NEEDED TO GET THE JOB DONE, AND THE DESIRED WIRE SIZE. ALL THESE FACTORS ARE VERY IMPORTANT IN THE DESIGN OF A WIND TURBINE FOR YOUR AREA. THIS IS A GIFT TO YOU MY VIEWERS AND I HOPE YOU FIGURE OUT HOW TO GET THE MOST OUT OF IT. I WILL PROBABLY OFFER THE FULL 2 PROGRAMS TO DOWN LOAD IF I CAN FIND A SITE TO PLACE THEM AT. THESE PROGRAMS ARE IN GWBASIC LANGUAGE. THERE IS A SITE CALLED FRIENDLYRAT.COM WHERE YOU CAN DOWN LOAD THE BASIC COMPILER TO RUN THESE PROGRAMS. SORRY I LEARNED TO PROGRAM WHEN I WAS GOING THROUGH ROBOTICS AT TEXAS STATE TECHNICAL INSTITUTE IN SWEETWATER/ROSCOE CAMPUS, A DIVISION OF A&M. THIS WAS WAY BACK IN 1982 OR 83. HELLO COMMODORE 64 AND TRS 80s AND TI 99s THE CUTTING EDGE OF TECHNOLOGY FOR THE 80s , AND HELLO BASIC PROGRAMMING. THAT WAS WHEN 64 MEGABITES WAS REALLY COOL. BUT THE BEST THING IS THAT

PART 3 HOW TO CEILING FAN WIND TURBINE

THIS IS A VIDEO TO SHOW THOSE WHO DONT WANT TO SPEND A LOT OF MONEY FOR THE BIG SYSTEMS OUT THERE. THE BLACK UNIT IN THE BACK GROUND IS THE ONE THAT IM MAKING FOR A FRIEND WHO WILL USE IT WITH GREAT GLADNESS. HIS ELECTRICAL SYSTEM WAS ALMOST COMPLETELY DESTROYED BY LIGHTENING. IT WOULD COST TOO MUCH FOR REPAIRS AND NEW DEPOSITS AND OLD BILL TO RECONNECT, ESPECIALY WITH REPAIRS FOR A NEW SERVICE BOX AND UPDATING TO A BREAKER SYSTEM AND THE WIRES DESTROYED IN THE HOUSE. ALTHOUGH THIS UNIT WILL NOT NORMALLY SUPPLY A NORMAL HOUSE HOLD IT WILL ALLOW HIM TO HAVE LIGHTS , RADIO, TV , CELLPHONE CHARGING, AND A FEW MORE THINGS BUT NOT ALL AT ONCE OR CONSTANTLY. BUT 20 DOLLARS A DAY FOR GAS IN A GENERATOR IS NOT AN OPTION EITHER. A BAG OF ICE, AND A COOLER IS. WE ARE MAKING A SOLAR HOT WATER HEATER AS WELL. BY 1:00 PM HE WILL HAVE ENOUGH WATER TO DO DISHES AND GET A NICE HOT SHOWER. THEN RELAX BY THE TV OR RADIO FOR A FEW HOURS ON STORED ENERGY. THEN GO TO SLEEP WITH A SMILE. IF HE GETS UP IN THE NIGHT HE CAN JUST TURN ON THE LIGHT. AND ITS ALL FREE. I HAVE ONE CONFESSION TO MAKE ABOUT THE ONE IN THE FIRST VIDEO THAT EVERYONE HAS COMPLEMENTED ON FROM THE BEGINNING. THAT IS , THAT THE ONE THAT IS IN THE VIDEO IS THE 7th OR 8th ONE I DID. I DID IT FOR SOMEONE ELSE BUT I DESTROYED ONE OF THE COIL SETS IN IT BY PULLING ON THE WIRES TO HARD WHILE I WAS RETHREADING THE WIRES TO COME OUT THE OTHER SIDE. BUT THE 12 VOLT SYSTEM INSTEAD OF 24 VOLT SYSTEM WILL NOT SLOW THE BLADES DOWN WHEN

Cannon Power Group is a leader in financing wind energy projects

Learn how Cannon Power Group, during challenging economic conditions, successfully financed the development of WP/WF, one of the largest wind energy projects in the United States. The wind farm’s array of turbines spans 30 miles along the Columbia River ridgeline and will produce 500 megawatts (MW) of renewable power at its completion. Each turbine was manufactured by Siemens and collectively generate enough clean electricity for over 250000 households per year.
